The biennial National Rural Health Conference is the pre-eminent event in Australia for anyone who is committed to rural and remote health and wellbeing. Whatever your interest in healthy, sustainable and resilient rural communities this Conference will be of interest to you. Whether you are a consumer, a health professional or student, a researcher or a manager, you will be able to engage with subjects and people of interest to you.
It’s a rural health conference, but one that recognises the critical role played by education, rural industries and a wide range of other sectors and professions. So the Conference will have plenty for rural citizens and those working in rural education, regional development, housing, local government, community services, transport and infrastructure – as well as for health professionals from all disciplines.
The 14th WONCA World Rural Health Conference will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre from Saturday 29 April – Tuesday 2 May 2017.
This international event will see delegates from around the world exchange information on the latest developments and challenges in rural family practice and rural and remote health generally. The last WONCA Rural Health Conference held in Australia was in Melbourne in 2002. The conference is expected to attract 900+ national and international delegates including rural doctors, researchers and academics, teachers, doctors-in-training, medical students and policy makers and administrators from both the public and private sectors.
The program will include a wide range of plenary sessions and workshops, and a number of excellent national and international keynote speakers.

A WORLD OF RURAL HEALTH IN THE TROPICAL CITY OF CAIRNS, QUEENSLAND
The 14th National Rural Health Conference and the 14th WONCA World Rural Health Conference are being held on the north east coast of Queensland, in the beautiful tropical city of Cairns where the rainforest meets the reef. Cairns is the only place where two World Heritage-listed areas are side-by-side, you can dive the depths of the Great Barrier Reef or soar above the world’s oldest tropical rainforest
Cairns is home to the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji and Yirrganydji people and we acknowledge these traditional owners.
Cairns is the hub of Tropical Far North Queensland, which is 400,000sq km, equal to the combined size of California and Oregon or Spain and Portugal. Cairns also has the closest access to the Great Barrier Reef, which is the largest reef in the world, measuring 2,011km in length and 72 km across at its widest point, also making it the world’s largest World Heritage Area. There are 165,000 people within the Cairns Regional Council area.
The Cairns international airport is only 7km away (10 minute drive) and there are direct flights from all Australian capital cities with Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar. Delegates are encouraged to make the most of their time in Cairns and stay for a few days before or after the Conference.
